AVI Reading Levels Explained: Always Find Books at the Right Level

Everything you need to know about AVI reading in primary school + how to encourage reading pleasure at home without stress about stamps.

As a parent, you quickly hear terms like AVI M3, E4 or AVI Plus in primary school. But what do these AVI reading levels mean exactly? And how do you ensure that your child reads books at home that perfectly match their reading development at school, without reading becoming an obligation?

On this page, we clearly explain how the AVI system works and how our children's book subscriptions and educational practice packs help to continue reading effortlessly and with great pleasure at the right level.

How do AVI reading levels work in primary school?

The AVI system indicates a child's technical reading level. AVI stands for Analyse van Individualiseringsvormen (Analysis of Individualization Forms). The levels are linked to primary school grades and are indicated by the letters M (Middle) and E (End).

Useful overview: AVI level per grade

AVI Level Grade (Indication) Characteristics of the Level
AVI Start Beginning of Grade 2 (Group 3) Short sentences, simple monosyllabic words (e.g., mank, roos, kat - lame, rose, cat).
AVI M3 Middle of Grade 2 (Group 3) Simple storylines, familiar sounds (ui, oe, eu - a_y, oo, er), short sentences.
AVI E3 End of Grade 2 (Group 3) Slightly longer sentences, compound words (e.g., speeltuin - playground).
AVI M4 / E4 Grade 3 (Group 4) Multi-syllable words, punctuation becomes more important for intonation.
AVI M5 / E5 Grade 4 (Group 5) More difficult loanwords, longer paragraphs and more complex storylines.
AVI M6 / E6 to Plus Grades 5 to 7 (Groups 6 to 8) Fluent and comprehensive reading is central, rich vocabulary and more abstract topics.

Important: AVI is a tool, not an obligation!

Many parents are fixated on the AVI stamp on the cover of a book. But did you know that sticking too strictly to levels can actually lead to a reading slump? If a child only has to read 'obligatory' level books, motivation can quickly disappear. Reading pleasure comes from variety!

Reading at level with variety: Our Children's Book Subscription

At Kinderboekenland, we believe that the ideal book package matches both your child's technical ability and their world. That's why we look beyond just a formal stamp on the spine of a book.

In our subscription, you receive a balanced mix:

  • Official AVI titles: Perfect for extra practice at home with the reading technique learned at school.
  • Equivalent books at level (without AVI stamp): Beautiful picture books, captivating stories, non-fiction books, and comics. These seamlessly match the AVI reading levels in terms of vocabulary, font size, and sentence length, but do not necessarily carry an official label.

Through this variety, your child always reads at the right level, while reading remains surprising, fun, and challenging!

Frequently Asked Questions about AVI Reading Levels & Reading Packs

Q: Are there only books with an official AVI stamp in the package?

No, we deliberately create a varied combination. You will receive both official AVI books and carefully selected children's books without a stamp that perfectly match your child's stage in terms of level and vocabulary. This way, we prevent reading from feeling like schoolwork.

Q: What is the difference between the children's book subscription and the practice packs?

The children's book subscription focuses on increasing overall reading pleasure by periodically delivering varied storybooks at the right level. Our practice packs (such as Oefenpret met stift and Leesfeest) are separate sets focused on specific skills such as writing, making loops, and initial reading training.

Q: What if my child progresses in AVI level faster than average?

No problem! You can easily adjust your subscription's level at any time via your account or by contacting us. This way, the package always grows with the Cito scores and progress at school.

Q: My child doesn't like reading. Which AVI level should I choose?

If in doubt or if motivation is low, it's better to choose half a level lower or focus on visual books (such as our Oefenpret pack or level-appropriate comics). Success experiences quickly restore confidence and reading pleasure.
